You may be wondering, what is junior varsity? What are people talking about and they mention junior varsity? It’s quite simple. Junior varsity is a lower-level competition that can be found at the high school and collegiate levels. It is usually considered a chance for younger players to compete against each other and gain experience to be prepared to play at the varsity level. Let’s take a closer look at what it means to compete in athletics on the junior varsity level.
Perhaps you were a player on your high school football team and you have heard teammates and coaches talking about the junior varsity games. Maybe your coach wants you to play in a junior varsity game which would usually be played on a weeknight and not on Fridays. Playing in junior varsity games is a good thing for you if you are a younger player.
Playing in the junior varsity football game or other sporting events will allow you to participate with other players similar to your age and ability. Usually, the varsity players at your school will be the older and most physically mature athletes. This would apply to varsity football, basketball, soccer, and track along with other sports at your school. It stands to reason the older players’ team will more than likely have an advantage with that extra year of growth, strength, and maturity. It does make a big difference.
